Neil's death - who is to blame?

In the 14th chapter of the book "Dead Poets Society" Neil Perry, one of the main characters, commits suicide. He kills himself with the revolver of his father without having a guilty conscience.

But now we all ask the same question: who or what is to blame for his death? Is it the school stress that weighs him down, his English teacher Mr. Keating or his own father?

I think we can't say that it is only his fathers fault, the fault of Mr. Keating, or the fault of someone/something else.
For Neil's decision to commit suicide we have to blame more things than just one. There are several reasons he does that.

In my opinion it wasn't just that he didn't get to become what he wanted to be but also because he wanted to be a good and brave son, whose dad is proud of his son and he understood how much his parents, especially his father, have done for him that he is going to be a wealthy man.
I think Neil understood that his perspective and his fathers perspective of a great and successfully life is completely different and that made him sad and a bit disappointed. He wanted to become a famous actor because he loved acting and that was his biggest dream and his father wanted him to become a doctor to make much money and to have the opportunity to build a family he can take care of.
Neil's english teacher Mr. Keating supported Neil to follow his dreams, to become whatever he wanted to ,to be strong and especially to not follow always the rules of his father.
All these advices have messed up a lot in Neil's head and that confused him very much.

Through the advices of Mr. Keating Neil followed his dreams against the rules of his father and that made his father very disappointed and angry so he had to be more strict and had to forbid Neil more so he had nearly no free time anymore to be creative and to follow his dreams.
If Neil's father wouldn't have been so strict and wouldn't have planned Neil's whole life, Mr. Keating couldn't have confused Neil that much that he committed suicide in the end.

To conclude you can say, that Neil's father and Mr. Keating contribute to his death but there are also other reasons he killed himself, like the fear to be a horrible son or the fear to be not independent and free.

  1. Hey Klara,
I really like your argumentation about the death of Neil Perry, because you showed two possible people who could be a reason for Neil's death. Added to that you had very good arguments on both sides and I like that you made a conclusion. In my opinion your spelling and how you conected the sentences was very good. I don't think you have to correct anything else on this blogpost.
